Water levels in reservoirs in Saurashtra and Kutch are rising owing to the monsoon, giving hope the region would not undergo a water crisis similar to last year after the monsoons failure.
The state irrigation department said water storage in 135 dams had increased by 167.91 million cubic metre (mcm) till Monday morning owing to torrential rains in their catchment areas.
Similarly, water storage in 20 reservoirs used for drinking water in Kutch has increased by 0.11 mcm. Though the intensity of rains has reduced, light rains continue to add to the water level in the reservoirs. Chief Engineer(Irrigation) and in-charge of North Gujarat region M K Jadav said all dams would get filled up this monsoon.
Though water available in 17 dams of North Gujarat region was only 18.53 per cent of their total capacity,Jadav said the region was not likely to face drinking water problem as Mehsanas Dharoi dam had 26.46% of its total storage capacity.
Though South and Central Gujarat have not received much rainfall so far, some of the dams in the two regions have received sufficient water owing to rainfall in their catchment areas in Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
