A mob assaulted a head constable attached with the traffic police department of Vadodara on Tuesday, after he allegedly hit a motorcyclist riding with two in pillion at Kapurai junction of the city. The crowd protest that lasted for several hours saw the mob indulging in vandalism and also attacking three other policemen who reached to rescue the constable.
The incident occurred in the afternoon, when head constable Shantilal Parmar stopped a a motorcycle with three riders. Yogesh Baria, 19, who was allegedly hit by baton was seen bleeding. The alleged police assault angered bystanders, who attacked Parmar instantly and also rushed Baria to a hospital.
The mob set afire Parmar’s motorcycle, even as a police team rushed in from the Panigate police station. The mob, however, cornered the police team and attacked them. The police team tried to rescue Parmar by taking him into the jeep, but the mob dragged him out again.
Baria’s sister Parul, said, “My brother was riding the two-wheeler when the police constable hit him with the baton. He has suffered serious injuries due to the fall and the impact.”
Eye witnesses alleged that Parmar hit Bariya after the latter refused to pay him bribe.
Inspector M Waghela: “Parmar had tried to stop Baria as he was riding with three persons on the motorcycle. However, Baria zoomed ahead and lost his balance . The people, however, attacked Parmar. We are in the process of identifying the accused persons who attacked Parmar.”
