For the last few weeks, Vadodara resident Akshay Kurpane had been facing parking issues with his new neighbour in an upper middle-class housing society in Vadodara’s Bhayli area.

Kurpane scheduled a meeting with the neighbour, Sushilkumar Rajendraprasad Singh, on Sunday evening to amicably resolve the matter.

But Singh seemingly had other intentions in mind.

As soon as Kurpane came close to him, Singh stabbed him with a knife that he was carrying along. The 30-year-old succumbed to his injuries before he could reach the hospital.

On Monday, Vadodara Taluka police station arrested Singh in the murder case.

Police said that the incident occurred around 8pm on Sunday when Kurpane, accompanied by a friend, arrived at Arose, a high-rise residential complex, to speak to Singh to “resolve the animosity” over a parking spot in the complex.

“While the friend was parking his two-wheeler in the compound, Kurpane approached Singh, who was armed with a knife. Singh is said to have immediately stabbed Kurpane as he came closer,” Police Inspector V M Tank of Vadodara Taluka Police station told The Indian Express. Kurpane was rushed to the Gotri GMERS hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, he added.

The Taluka police station has initiated a probe into the incident after arresting Singh, a native of Chhattisgarh. Tank said, “The accused has told us that he recently shifted to the apartment, which is owned by his sister. Primary statements of the victim’s family and others suggest that there had been animosity between the victim and the accused over the parking spot. The two were meeting to sort out the issue and since Kurpane was bringing along a friend, it appears that Singh had arrived armed with a weapon. We will investigate if he had pre-planned the attack.”

Family members of Kurpane, who remained inconsolable on Monday, demanded strict punishment for the accused. Kurpane’s brother Aakash said, “My brother never fought with anyone or had enemies. It would have been a small matter of discussion… We do not know who this accused is as he had recently moved into the apartment as a tenant. We do not even know the owner of the flat. We have been living here since the last one-and-a-half-years and never had any animosity with anyone… The police ought to do its investigation and hand out exemplary punishment. We have lost my brother forever.”
