A Vadodara BJP leader filed a police complaint against his party colleague and two others alleging that they duped him of Rs 21 lakh in a bogus land deal, said the police, adding, one of the accused has been arrested.
Based on the complaint filed by BJP corporator Parakramsinh Jadeja, the Vadodara City Police Tuesday arrested one of the three accused — Jamaji Sodha and launched a manhunt to track down the BJP leader Dilipsinh Gohil and the third accused Kamlesh Detroja.
In his complaint, Jadeja said that sometime last year, Gohil and Detroja had offered to sell him a piece of land located in Sukhalipura village, allegedly belonging to Detroja’s uncle. The complaint states that Detroja had claimed that his uncle — Amrut Parecha — had given him the power of attorney to sell the land. Jadeja alleged that Gohil and Detroja told him that they had become “partners” in the said land and had decided to sell it for Rs 1.45 crore. Accordingly, Jadeja paid them Rs 21 lakh in advance, of which, Detroja took Rs 11 lakh and Gohil was paid Rs 10 lakh.
Gohil, who is the former chairman of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s school board, is an active member of the BJP.
Jadeja told the police that the accused allegedly told him that since Parecha was unwell, the registration of the sale deed could be done after he recovers. Meanwhile, Jadeja was made to sign documents of the sale deed and in his absence, the accused allegedly brought in a lookalike of Parecha — Jamaji Sodha — to pose as the landowner for the registration of sale deed at the office of the sub-registrar in Vadodara.
Assistant Commissioner of Police GB Babhaniya said: “On being given the land papers, the complainant suspected that something was amiss as the remaining amount that he had paid to Parecha had not been cleared. On probing, the complainant got to know about the fraud and reported it to the police”.
“We tracked down Sodha and arrested him while two teams have been formed to track down Detroja and Gohil,” said Babhaniya.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Jadeja said that the accused had offered to return the money when he had confronted them but he wanted to opt for the legal recourse.
Jadeja said, “The accused admitted that they hatched this plan as they needed money. They told me they would return the money but it is a cheating case, so I approached the police. They not only cheated me but also the landowner, who is unaware about this bogus sale.”
On Tuesday, a local court remanded Sodha to one day in police custody. Sodha, police said, has claimed that the accused had paid him Rs 5 lakh to pose as Parecha .
