95-year-old tribal woman mauled to death by leopard in Chhota Udepur

The victim was working in a field next to her house when she was allegedly dragged away by the animal

A 95-year-old tribal woman was killed by a leopard in Chhota Udepur district’s Khos village on Monday evening. The forest department launched a hunt and captured the leopard in the early hours of Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Kapuri Vesta Rathwa, was a resident of Pujara Falia of Khos village and was working in a field next to her house around 5.30pm on Monday when she was allegedly dragged away by the leopard about 150 meters away and mauled to death, said sources.

Rathwa’s body was later found from the spot even as attempts made by local villagers to rescue her went in vain. Soon after the incident, the forest department set up cages in the vicinity and managed to capture the leopard in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Sharing details of the incident, Range Forest Officer Niranjan Rathwa said, “The leopard attacked the 95-year-old woman, dragged her away and killed her… We captured the animal at 4 am on Tuesday. The villagers have breathed a sigh of relief. We have requested them to not venture out alone between sunset and sunrise as the attacks take place around that time …”
