Town in Kheda in ‘disturbed’ list

Even as the government claims there have been no communal riots in the state since 2002,it has declared Kapadvanj town in Kheda district as “disturbed” and clamped a five-year ban on transfer of property among members of different communities without the prior sanction of district collector.

Even as the government claims there have been no communal riots in the state since 2002,it has declared Kapadvanj town in Kheda district as “disturbed” and clamped a five-year ban on transfer of property among members of different communities without the prior sanction of district collector.

With effect from June 1, 2012,the state government has imposed Gujarat Prohibition of Transfer of Immovable Property and Provision for Protection of Tenants from Eviction from Premises in Disturbed Areas Act,1991,commonly called Disturbed Areas Act,for five years. This means no Hindu can sell his or her property to a Muslim and vice versa, without prior permission of the district collector.

The state revenue department’s notification dated May 30,a copy of which is available with the Indian Express, says,“…Given the intensity, duration and frequency of riots and mob violence leading to communal tension in the areas of Kapadvanj in Kheda, the areas falling under the jurisdiction of the police station of Kapadvanj town in Kheda district are now scheduled as disturbed areas for five years, from June 1,2012,to May 31,2017.”

Kapadvanj had seen some communal riots since 2002.

Kheda superintendent of police Girish Singhal said,”The city has seen instances of rioting and there is a need for the Disturbed Areas Act. The city witnessed riots in 1991,2002 and 2005-06 also.”

The act is also in force in parts of Ahmedabad,Vadodara and Surat.
