Three persons were left dead and several injured after a truck on Monday rammed into a bus parked on the side of Vadodara-Ahmedabad National Expressway 1 (NE-1), about 10 km from Ahmedabad.
Deepak Hasmukhlal Pandya (57) of Mumbai, Ishwar Babu Rabari (59) of Mehsana and Somchand Viraji Thakor (60) lost their lives in the accident.
An FIR has been filed against the truck driver at Kanbha police station in Rural Ahmedabad. On the basis of the complaint by 55-year-old Lalit Chaman Nayee – driver of the Patel Travels bus whose passengers lost their lives – the incident took place at 5 am on October 27.
Nayee said he left from Maharashtra’s Goregaon late on October 26, with the bus carrying 34 passengers for Patan, Gujarat. At about 5 am on October 27, an SUV hit the bus while attempting to overtake it. Nobody was injured in the accident.
Both vehicles were then parked on the side of NE-1 to assess the damage, with the bus driver putting the hazard lights on. Another car came and parked there as they were acquaintances of those in the first car.
The FIR said about 10 passengers had alighted from the bus to see the extent of the damage when a truck hit the back of the bus, severely damaging a portion of it.
Due to this collision, several people, both from the bus as well as from the cars, were either pushed under the bus which jerked forward due to the impact, or got pressed between the bus and the car parked in front of it.
Lalit Nayee was also pushed under the bus. When he managed to crawl out and check, he found Deepak Hasmukhlal Pandya and Ishwar Babu Rabari of Mehsana had received serious injuries to the head and were lying unconscious.
When the ambulance arrived, paramedics had declared both men dead on the spot. Several injured people were moved to a hospital by ambulance teams. Somchand Viraji Thakor (60) of Malad, died later in the hospital during treatment, the FIR stated.
The driver of the truck, Ramavtar Hanumanram Bishnoi of Rajasthan, was booked under BNS sections for rash or negligent driving, acts that endanger human life, as well as under sections 177 and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. He was arrested by Kanbha Police.
