Days after his posters mysteriously appeared in Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat, BJP leader Sanjay Joshi, considered bete noire of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and other senior party leaders on the sidelines of a private event here, sending out signal of his possible return to active politics.
Joshi was in Ahmedabad to attend the wedding of VHP leader Pravin Togadia’s son on Sunday night. He also met Governor O P Kohli and former chief minister Keshubhai Patel during the event. On Monday, he again met Keshubhai at his residence in Gandhinagar and had lunch with Governor Kohli at Raj Bhavan.
Joshi’s meeting with the Chief Minister continued for around 15 minutes at the wedding reception.
According to a person attending wedding, “Joshiji met a number of political personalities at the wedding reception and appeared to be frank and open with them.”
Hinting at possible return to mainstream politics, Joshi told mediapersons at the wedding that he was a “disciplined party worker” and “ready to take up any responsibility that the party would find suitable for him”.
On Monday morning, Joshi again met Keshubhai. When asked about his meeting with Keshubhai, he said, “It is my personal visit to Gujarat… Keshubhai is my elder and I met him out of respect. This meeting has nothing to do with politics.”
Joshi had to quit BJP general secretary post after a controversial CD of him surfaced in 2005. During Narendra Modi’s tenure in Gujarat, he used to rarely appear in a public event.
However, in the past few weeks, posters and banners appeared in Ahmedabad, Surat and other parts of the state, mainly Patidar dominated areas, demanding his return as BJP’s active leader after the party’s relatively poor performance in the local body election.
