The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has ordered the closure of all slaughter houses and shops selling meat, fish and chicken on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti on Tuesday, stating that the Jain community “had a huge presence” in Ahmedabad.
Extending greetings to the Jain community, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said in a message, “Let us all resolve to build a harmonious society by following the path of compassion, Jivdaya and non-violence as prophesied by Mahavir Swami.”
Citing an advisory by the Animal Welfare Board of India, an AMC release stated, “This is an order to voluntarily close the slaughter houses, and commercial units selling meat, fish and chicken, on April 4 (Tuesday).”
