THE GUJARAT government on Tuesday ordered two companies, one in Ahmedabad and the other in Surendranagar, to immediately stop the manufacture and sale of cough syrups that were found to be “Not of Standard Quality (NSQ).”

Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said that recently, samples of the Respifresh cough syrup manufactured by Rednex Pharmaceutical Pvt Ltd in Bavla, Ahmedabad, and Relife syrup manufactured by Shape Pharma Pvt Ltd of Muli in Surendranagar, were “declared NSQ.” A risk-based joint inspection of both these firms was conducted by the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) and drug inspectors from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation between October 3 and 5.

“Based on the various deficiencies found in this joint investigation report, the joint investigation team ordered Shape Pharma Pvt. Ltd, Surendranagar and Rednex Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Ahmedabad to stop manufacturing the medicine with immediate effect,” a statement quoted Patel as saying.

However, it added that during the joint inspection, no NSQ medication had been found on the premises of both firms.

The health minister did not specify why batches of these two brands of cough syrups were found to be NSQ. The Indian Express attempted to reach out to Dr Ratankanvar Gadhavicharan, the in-charge Commissioner of FDCA as well as Joint Commissioner Hitesh L Ravat. Both were unavailable for comment.

As a precautionary measure during the investigation, three samples of other cough syrups from Shape Pharma Pvt Ltd and 11 samples of other cough syrups from Rednex Pharmaceuticals Ltd. were taken for testing. All these 14 samples have been sent to the government laboratory for further examination. Based on the report of which further action will be taken. Further, all Assistant Commissioners have been instructed to conduct a complete and strict inspection of all the oral liquid or cough syrup manufacturing companies in their jurisdiction.

During this inspection, water quality, source of raw materials, production process, quality control system and other important issues will be thoroughly examined. The investigation has also been instructed to take at least five samples of different brands of oral liquid or cough syrup and have those samples tested expeditiously by the Vadodara laboratory. Thereafter, the recall of all Not of Standard (NSQ) declared medicines in the supply chain from factory to retailer will be done under the constant supervision of FDCA officials, so that not a single unsafe batch is available in the market, the Minister said.

He added that an immediate ban has been imposed on the sale, supply and distribution of the declared NSQ cough syrup medicines.
