A MINOR rape victim from Bharuch district died at a hospital in Vadodara on Monday, where she was admitted on Saturday for treatment for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

According to the FIR registered by Bharuch district police, the tribal girl was allegedly raped by a 25-year-old man, who had been entrusted with the task of taking her home from her school on November 12 after she fell ill.

The girl’s family said on Monday that the teacher of the primary school of their area had (on November 12) called up a relative of the girl and informed that she was sending the girl home along with the 25-year-old man, who is from the same village .

According to the FIR, the accused stopped his two-wheeler at a secluded spot on the way, forcibly took the girl to a field, raped her and left her on the road side.

Additional Superintendent of Police A Meena told The Indian Express that the accused had been arrested and sent to judicial custody. A medical examination of the girl confirmed sexual assault, police sources said.

A senior doctor at the Vadodara hospital, however, told The Indian Express on Monday that the file notings of another hospital from which she had referred only mentioned her “pre-existing ailments of diabetes and ketoacidosis” as she was brought to the hospital in “an unconscious state” on Saturday evening, nearly 10 days after the alleged crime was committed.

The doctor said, “She was admitted on Saturday evening and passed away early Monday morning… She had been diagnosed with DKA and was undergoing treatment in the paediatric ward. We do not conclusively know the cause of death as the postmortem report is awaited… Since she was referred from hospital, the file notings do not contain any mention of crime-related injuries.”

The victim’s mother alleged on Monday that her daughter died of injuries from the crime. However, Bharuch district police refused to confirm the family’s claim.

The girl’s mother said that the family is “dissatisfied” with the police probe in the case. “It was on the third day that we found the injuries on her body. She was unwell and had been sent home with the accused who assaulted her, which led to her death. My only daughter has passed away and I want the harshest punishment for the accused,” the girl’s mother said.
