A month ahead of the All-India Congress Committee’s April session, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is expected to visit Gujarat on March 7-8, party spokesperson Manish Doshi said on Tuesday.

The AICC session is scheduled to be held in Gujarat in April, after 64 years. Gandhi is expected to plan the party strategy for the 2027 assembly elections in the state, Doshi said, adding, “we are proud that Gujarat has been chosen for this pilot project”.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet at the Sardar Patel Smarak in Shahibaug on April 8 while the AICC delegates session will be held on the riverfront on April 9, which will see nearly 2000 delegates. “We chose the smarak as it also marks the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel”, said Doshi.

Gandhi during his visit is expected to participate in the party’s political affairs committee meeting. Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Doshi said that Gandhi will also meet former and sitting MLAs and address party workers apart from meeting the other Congress members. “This visit is for the party alone, where Rahulji will meet everyone, including the smallest of party karyakarta, district and taluka chiefs among others,” said Doshi.

The AICC session is due to be held in Ahmedabad on April 8-9, the last session for which was organised in 1961 in Bhavnagar. On Tuesday, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal also landed in Ahmedabad and held a series of meetings with the party leaders. Venugopal also visited the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel national memorial at Shahibaug, and the Gandhi Ashram. Venugopal said that 2025 is the organisational year for the Congress, and therefore the focus will be on strengthening the party from the grassroots level to the top.

Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge have decided to hold massive organisational programmes throughout the year. We are starting it from Gujarat. On March 7-8 we are going to do some exercise in that regard,” he told PTI. Taking to X, Venugopal said the upcoming session will be held in Gujarat, “the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, two of the most towering figures of the country’s freedom movement, taking ahead the fight for protecting the Constitution and the legacy of these pioneering leaders”.

“This will serve as yet another reminder of our party’s deep roots and unbreakable bond with the people of Gujarat. It is also the state where the ruling regime has crossed all limits of injustice, corruption and destruction of Constitutional values. Through the session, we aim to send a message to the people of Gujarat and the country that the Congress has and always will fight for their rights, to ensure constitutional principles are upheld,” he said in a post on X.
