Police fire in air as Godhra crowd turns violent

Two constables were injured in the violence,police said.

The Godhra police on Wednesday fired tear gas shells and bullets in the air to disperse an unruly crowd that pelted stones at them when they arrived at a locality to rescue cattle allegedly brought there for illegal slaughtering.

Acting on a tip-off that a 22-strong herd of cows and buffaloes were being offloaded in Saat Pul locality for illegal slaughtering,seven policemen from the local police station reached the spot around 11 am and tried to rescue the cattle.

Police said the locals pelted stones at them,injuring a constable and a head constable.

“Around 200 people gathered at the spot and started pelting stones after which reinforcements were called in. Local Crime Branch and Special Operations Group personnel reached the spot,” police said,adding that 20-odd policemen were later confronted by around 700 residents.

Godhara SP Sachin Badshah said three rounds of bullets and four shells of tear gas were fired to disperse the crowd.
