Based on the recommendations made by a committee formed by the Gujarat government, the Education Department on Thursday announced replacing ‘ekum kasauti’ (unit tests) with quarterly exams starting August 18 and semester examination from October 6 for over 30 lakh students from Class III to VIII in over 32,000 government primary schools.

According to the new evaluation guidelines announced by the education department, the Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) will prepare the question bank.

As reported by The Indian Express in April, the ‘360 degree assessment committee’ formed on March 3 has submitted its recommendation of replacing the ‘ekum kasauti’ with a comprehensive assessment format.

Following protests, representations and opposition to ‘ekum kasauti’ by teachers as well as educationists since it was launched in 2019-20 in over 33,000 government primary schools, the Gujarat government formed a special committee to deliberate on the assessment of students other than these weekly, fortnightly and monthly tests.

The committee has also proposed holistic performance report cards for primary school students in which students will be evaluated by their classmates, parents as well as themselves.

The quarterly tests will be held from August 18 to 30, 2025, in which a test of 40 marks will be taken in each subject.

The question papers will be prepared by teachers from the question bank and learning outcome based questions given by the GCERT. The test results will be mandatory to be shown to the parents and the marks will be added to the formative assessment.
