An alleged parking dispute in a residential colony escalated into a fatal public stabbing of a 30-year-old man in Vadodara’s Bhayli area on Sunday evening.
Akshay Kurpane succumbed to injuries during a “meeting” with the accused to “resolve animosity” over a parking spot in the Aurose residential complex. The Vadodara taluka police station on Monday arrested Sushilkumar Rajendraprasad Singh.
Police said that the incident occurred around 8 pm on Sunday, and that Kurpane had come with a friend.
“While the friend was parking his two-wheeler in the compound, Kurpane approached Singh, who was armed with a knife and is said to have immediately stabbed Kurpane as he came closer,” police inspector V M Tank told The Indian Express on Monday. Tank said that Kurpane was rushed to the Gotri GMERS hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Vadodara taluka police initiated a probe into the incident after arresting Singh, a native of Chhattisgarh. Tank said, “The accused has told us that he recently shifted to the apartment, which is owned by his sister. Primary statements of the victim’s family and other members suggest that there had been animosity between the victim and the accused over the parking spot. The two were meeting to sort out the issue and since Kurpane was bringing along a friend, it appears that Singh had arrived armed with a weapon. We will investigate if he had planned the attack.”
Family members of Kurpane, who remained inconsolable on Monday, demanded strict punishment for the accused. Kurpane’s brother, Aakash, said, “My brother never fought with anyone or had enemies. It would have been a small matter of discussion… We do not know who this accused is as he had recently moved into the apartment as a tenant. We do not even know the owner of the flat. We have been living here since the last one-and-a-half years and never had any animosity with anyone… The police ought to do its investigation and hand out exemplary punishment. We have lost my brother forever.”
