Most of the companies that came to Kutch in the wake of the devastating earthquake of 2001 and were given tax holidays have not kept their promise of hiring 85% of their workers from among the locals, according to the data released by the state labour and employment department in the recently concluded Assembly session.

At least 27 major companies flouted a 1995 government resolution, which made it mandatory for every private company availing of tax exemption or cheap land or other benefits to provide minimum 85% jobs to locals in the workers cadre and at least 60% in the managerial cadre.

State’s Labour and Employment Minister Vaju Vala said,“(Though there is no provision of taking punitive action against these companies,we have written to them, requesting them to follow the rule.”
