IITM on ‘monsoon mission’ to give a better weather forecast

The monsoon this year will be better than normal, said Prof. B N Goswami, director at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM),Pune

The monsoon this year will be better than normal, said Prof. B N Goswami, director at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM),Pune, which is working on the “Monsoon Mission”,a joint venture with the Indian Meteorological Department to help predict monsoons more precisely and a whole season in advance.

Goswami was speaking on the sidelines of a colloquium by the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad on “Scaling the potential predictability barrier of the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall with an Indian initiative”,Wednesday, attended by senior professors and experts.

With a funding of Rs 400 crore from the Centre, the project is expected to be complete by 2017. “Since the existing statistical models cannot predict droughts and floods and seasonal or long term prediction is very difficult,we are developing a dynamical model that will take care of all these limitations,” Prof. Goswami said.
