The Gujarat High Court on Monday, for the 14th time, adjourned the hearing on a petition challenging the clean chit given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 riots case when he was the chief minister. The matter was adjourned till May 5 after petitioner Zakia Jafri gave a list of discrepancies in the translation of documents done by the court’s registry.
This is the case in which the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT) gave a clean chit to Modi in 2012 who was then CM of Gujarat. The clean chit was based on a petition by Jafri against Modi and others for their alleged roles in 2002 post-Godhra riots. In December 2013 a metropolitan court upheld the SIT’s investigation.
Jafri challenged the metropolitan court’s order by filing a revision petition in the High Court in March, 2014.

After a month the court ordered its registry to translate voluminous documents of the case from Gujarati to English. In July the registry completed translating the documents and the court handed them over to the complainant’s lawyer.
To complete the task the state government paid Rs 39,927 to the registry.
After verification it was found that there were several discrepancies in the translation. On Monday Jafri’s lawyer M M Tirmizi gave a list of such discrepancies before justice S G Shah who is presiding over the case.
“The Registry (Translation Branch) and the other side may verify the discrepancies and confirm wherever changes need to be carried out in the original translation,” justice Shah ordered while adjourning the matter.
