At least three shops were gutted in a massive fire that broke out due to a short-circuit at Palanpur Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Banaskantha Monday, an official said. No casualty has been reported in the incident and the fire has been doused, he added.
“We received a call from Palanpur New Mandi at 10.19 am,” Jagdish Joshi, fire wireless officer (technical) in Palanpur, told The Indian Express.
The fire spread rapidly due to cotton bags at the market that farmers use to transport grains, he said.
“The fire came under control around 2.30 pm. Four or five traders have suffered massive losses due to the fire,” he said, adding, four fire tenders from Palanpur and six others from Unjha and Sidhpur had been pressed into service.
On Monday, Speaker Shankar Chaudhary raised the issue in the Assembly following which Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi updated the House that the fire was caused by a short-circuit in one of the shops and had been doused.
The Palanpur APMC caters to farmers not only from the north Gujarat districts of Mehsana, Sabarkantha, and Banaskantha, but also Saurashtra, Kutch and Rajasthan. Produce ranging from oilseeds to pulses to spices is traded at the APMC.
