After speculation about the heritage week celebrations being dampened with the model code of conduct being in place in the state, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) authorities have said that celebrations will match up to the city’s heritage status. The heritage week celebrations have been scheduled for November 19 to November 25 with the two-phase Assembly elections due on December 9 and December 14.
Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Kumar said, “After the city was declared the country’s first heritage city, we have not been able to celebrate. We had to put off our plans for the celebrations due to heavy rains and flood. This time the heritage week is clashing with the model code of conduct in the state.” Ahmedabad was declared the country’s first World Heritage City on July 8.
The AMC is partnering with the EC to integrate voter awareness programmes in celebrations. Kumar said, “The Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme which is part of the Election Commission of India shall be an integral part of the celebrations.”
Ahmedabad mayor Gautam Shah said, “We will follow the Model Code of Conduct. There will be no politicians involved in any of the events. The celebrations will include exhibitions of various aspects of the city’s heritage, an international dance festival and a Sufi concert at the Bhadra Plaza. A highlight of the festival will be the inauguration of a new haveli called ‘Baghban Haveli’ in Khijda Sheri of the old city.
