The Surendranagar collector on Thursday imposed prohibitory orders against public assembly in the district, which has witnessed several incidents of violence during ongoing protests by Dalits. The order categorically held leaders and workers of Shiv Sena responsible for the assault on seven members of a Dalit family in Gir Somnath, leading to a state-wide protest.

Citing a request received from the Surendranagar SP, District Collector Udit Agrawal issued the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC from July 21 noon till July 28 midnight.

The order read: “After the incident in Una taluka’s Mota Samadhiyala village Dalit youth who were skinning dead animals were thrashed and injured by Shiv Sena leaders/workers, there is anger among Dalit leaders who are protesting at various places in the state.”

Then contacted, Agrawal said, “This is entirely factual and based on the SP’s report. The prohibitory orders are to avoid any untoward incident.” Surendranagar has a population of 17 lakh of which 12 per cent are Dalits. On Wednesday, the district had witnessed widespread violence during a bandh.
