‘India has not taken a stand on its citizens’: Congress’s Gohil hits out at Centre over deportations, Bangladesh situation

Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Shaktisinh Gohil on Saturday lashed out at the Central government, alleging it had taken “no stand” on the issue of the deportation of Indians in US military aircraft with handcuffs and chains, likening it to be an “insult of Bharat Mata”. Gohil further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “international policy” had been a “failure” as the attack on Hindus in Bangladesh was a consequence of India extending asylum to the neighbouring country’s ousted PM Sheikh Hasina.

Addressing a press conference in Rajkot, a day ahead of the local body polls in the state, the GPCC President said that the Modi-led government had “failed” to take a “strong” stand on issues concerning India. Gohil said, “The increased tariff by the US would impact Indian traders. Our PM has not been successful in international relations. Currently, the US charges a tariff of 3.5% on India’s exports. This will become 9.5%. India is a big exporter of steel textile and diamonds and such a high tariff will cause a problem… India has not taken a stand on its citizens, found to be living illegally in India, being deported with handcuffs like criminals and terrorists.”

Gohil pointed out that “a country like Colombia” had urged the US to treat its nationals with dignity and sent civilian aircraft to bring back those in line for deportation in the US. Gohil said, “It is an insult to Bharat Mata that our citizens are returning after facing such humiliation, handcuffed in a military aircraft with one washroom. Instead of raising the issue, the Indian government is defending the US actions… When we raised the issue in Parliament, the External Affairs Minister gave a speech as if what Trump did was fair…”

further said, “A small country like Colombia pushed back the US and said that not a single citizen of their country, found living illegally, should be handcuffed and humiliated. They told the US that they need not send military planes as Colombia had arranged civilian aircraft to bring back their citizens with respect and dignity. Why a big country like ours cannot do it?”

Gohil said the “attack on Hindus in Bangladesh” was due to the fact that the Indian government had given asylum to Hasina against whom the “anger of the people of Bangladesh” had exploded.

Gohil said, “It has made the Bangaldeshis resentful against India and resulted in attacks on our temples and Hindu brothers there. But our government does nothing… The PM must go to Bangladesh to protect the temples and admit in public that giving asylum to Hasina was a mistake that has caused the attack on the temples and the Hindus.”
