Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the 14th edition of Garib Kalyan Mela (GKM) from Deesa in Banaskantha district. He said that benefits worth Rs Rs 4568 crore will be distributed among poor people of the state to help them become “self-sustaining”.
“Till now, through more than 1600 GKMs, 1.66 crore poor people have been provided with assistance worth Rs 36,800 crore”, Patel said on the occasion on Friday.
“Here in Deesa today, I have got the opportunity to provide kits to more than 11000 people,” he added.
Launched in 2009, GKM was the brainchild of the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi. During the mela, held at different locations across the state, poor people are given benefits of various government schemes. These benefits include vocational kits for various artisans.
In his speech on the occasion, CM Patel heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that “25 crore people have come out of poverty” because of the latter’s efforts.
“Ever since Narendrabhai (Modi) took responsibility of serving the country, a new chapter of garib kalyan (Welfare of the poor) has begun. (He) has built the building of poor’s welfare on four pillars of Awas, Aargoya, Anna and Avak (residence, health, food and income)… Having confidence in Modiji’s guarantee of Garib Kalyan, people of the country have given him the country’s responsibility for the third consecutive time,” he said.
