To assess the need to have a common civil code and to prepare a draft law for the same, the Gujarat government on Tuesday announced a five-member committee headed by former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel made the announcement at a press conference here that was also attended by Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) M K Das and Law Secretary P M Raval.

The other members of the committee will be retired IAS officer C L Meena, senior advocate R C Kodekar, former vice chancellor of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University Daxesh Thakar and social worker Gitaben Shroff.

CM Patel said, “This committee will do a thorough study of all the aspects and submit its report in 45 days. And the state government will take appropriate decision over it.”

Replying to a question, Sanghavi indicated that the committee will consult various people, including religious leaders from all communities. He also suggested that the Uttarakhand government has provided a model of Uniform Civil Code in the country and pointed out that it does not affect the tribal communities.
