Three BJP leaders, including Daman Municipality councillor Jayentibhai Patel, have been expelled from the party for six years for “anti-party activities” after they filed nomination forms as independent candidates for the November 5 elections to Daman gram panchayat and municipality and Diu district panchayat.
Speaking toThe Indian Express, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (DNH and DD) BJP president Mahesh Agariya said, “We have expelled two of our senior leaders and an active party worker from the party for six years after they had acted against the party and filed their nomination papers in the upcoming elections.”
On Wednesday, Bharatbhai Patel, the BJP president of Daman district (Union Territory), expelled Jayeshkumar Patel, who filed nomination form as an independent candidate for the Sarpanch election of Dabhel gram panchayat, from the party for six years.
After the election dates were announced, Jayesh Patel had sought party support for his candidature for the sarpanch election from Dabhel gram panchayat, but the party extended support to a woman candidate, Hexamiben Patel, sources said. BJP district leaders have made efforts to persuade Jayeskumar Patel to withdraw his nomination, but he stuck to his stand, leading to his expulsion from the party, party sources said.
Jayeshkumar Patel had been associated with the BJP for the last five years.
In the second incident, Diu District BJP president Mohan Laxman has suspended Akshay Babu, a party worker, after he filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate from ward number 6 in Diu district Panchayat election. The party leaders made every attempt to persuade him to withdraw his nomination forms, but he refused. The BJP had nominated Deepak Dewangi as the party candidate from the seat.
Similarly, a few days ago, Daman BJP president Mahesh Agariya had expelled senior leader Jayentibhai Patel (Mittal) after he submitted his nomination form as an independent candidate from ward no. 12 in the Daman Municipality election.
The BJP had nominated Laxmanbhai Tandel as the party candidate from the ward. Jayentibhai Patel was elected as a municipal councillor from ward no. 12 in 2020 on a Congress ticket. After a few months, he switched over to the BJP.
12 unanimously elected
Out of 15 wards in Daman Municipality, forms of some independent candidates were rejected, while several others had withdrawn their nominations, leading to the unanimous election of 12 BJP candidates. On October 25, election officials declared 12 BJP candidates as uncontested winners, as there was no candidate against them in the polls. The election for the Daman municipality will be held for three wards — 6, 7 and 12 – on November 5.
