Farm labourer commits ‘suicide’, articles supporting Patidar stir found near body

A middle-aged man allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in Jetalsar village of Jetpur taluka in Rajkot district Sunday. Police recovered a cap and pieces of papers supporting the ongoing Patidar quota stir from near his body.

Police said that Hemant Thummar (50), an agricultural labourer allegedly consumed poison early Sunday morning on an agricultural field in Jetalsar village. “He consumed tablets of grain preservative and committed suicide. We also recovered pieces of paper reading Jai Patidar, Jai Sardar. These could be pieces of suicide note,” Jetpur DySP Sunil Patil said.

Police also said that a cap reading Jai Sardar, Jai Patidar was also recovered from near his body. “His wife says that he had no work for the last 15 days,” Patil added.

Rajkot SP Antrip Sud said investigation was on to find out if the suicide was linked to the quota stir.

This is second suicide by a Patidar man within three days. A Patidar youth had allegedly committed suicide in a guest house in Dhoraji on Friday.
