A trip to Diu turned tragic as three engineering students — two from Andhra Pradesh and one from Telangana — of R K University in Gujarat’s Rajkot, died after their car allegedly overturned at Jangvad village on the Rajkot-Bhavnagar highway, early on Saturday, said the police, adding at least five others were injured during the accident.

According to the officers from Atkot police station, there were 12 students in the 7-seater car that allegedly lost control while taking a sharp turn at Jangvad village on Rajkot-Bhavnagar Highway.

The police identified the deceased as Saiyed Afrid,Naresh Kodavati, both from Andhra Pradesh, and Methi Harsha, of Telangana. All three were 17 years old.

According to the police, Saiyed Afrid, who was driving the vehicle, died on the spot and the two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

During the accident, five other students sustained injuries even as two among them suffered multiple fractures, and are undergoing treatment at the hospital, said the officers at the Atkot police station who rushed to the spot soon after getting the information about the accident. The rest of the students escaped unhurt, said the police.

The police said that all the 12 teen boys were students of the Computer Science Department of R K University and were staying in the college hostel. Some of them were in the first and third semesters of the course.

“The students took permission from the warden to go to Amreli and Dwarka in a car. They were on the way to Diu when the accident took place. These students hired a self-drive car from a private tours and travel office in Rajkot. All these students left the hostel campus on Friday night,” Vijaysinh Gurjar, Rajkot District Superintendent of Police, told The Indian Express.

“On the way to Rajkot-Bhavnagar highway, while taking a sharp turn at Jangvad village, the car driver reportedly lost control over the steering as a result of which the car overturned and skidded to the roadside,” said police sources.

The officer said that the police would register an offence over reckless driving and a probe is underway into the matter.

“Our teams are checking whether the car driver, Saiyed Afrid, possessed any driving licence or not,” he said.

Gurjar added that the family members of one of the students had arrived, while others were on their way.
