The Indian Navy, in a joint operation with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Gujarat Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS), seized approximately 700 kilograms of methamphetamine drugs from a boat on the coast of Gujarat’s Porbandar on Friday. Eight accused from an international drug cartel were apprehended by the agencies and taken for questioning to the Special Operations Group department on Friday.

“This is the second major successful coordinated Anti Narcotics Operations at sea by the Navy this year. Committed to ensuring a safe & secure maritime environment, while preventing illegal use of the seas, (sic)” the Navy posted on X.

A senior official who was part of the raid told The Indian Express that the gang was busted based on a tip-off received by the central NCB that a boat heading towards Porbandar from Iranian waters was concealing a consignment of MD drugs. The officer said, “The raid was carried out late at night, intercepting an unregistered, suspicious boat in the middle of the waters. As per the input, the contraband was found. Eight persons, who were on the boat, were apprehended.”

The security agencies are currently verifying the accused’s nationalities as no documents were found on their person, the official added. “They have said they primarily arrived from Iran,” he said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, too, took to X to appreciate the action of the security agencies. “Pursuing PM Narendra Modiji’s vision for a drug-free Bharat, our agencies today busted an international drug trafficking cartel and seized over 700 kg of contraband meth in Gujarat. The Joint Operation stands out as a stellar example of our commitment to the vision as well as the seamless coordination among our agencies. My heartiest congratulations on this landmark breakthrough,” said Shah.

Codenamed Sagar Manthan, the joint operations of the NCB, Indian Navy, and other agencies have led to a seizure of about 3700 kg of drugs this year.
