A special court in Ahmedabad has taken cognizance of a prosecution complaint by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in a case related to illegal betting and benami bank transactions, a statement by the Enforcement Directorate said on Tuesday.
The Surat office of the ED filed the complaint before the special court (PMLA) in Mirzapur in the case against five accused on September 26.
The ED had initiated an investigation on the basis of an FIR registered by DCB Police Station in Surat against Kamlesh Jariwala and other accused for commission of offences under various provisions of IPC for alleged cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy to obtain financial gain.
ED investigations revealed that the accused allegedly opened dummy bank accounts in the name of bogus firms using forged documents. He further provided these bank accounts to their accomplices, who used these dummy bank accounts to obtain illegal betting proceeds. During the course of investigation, ED carried out search operations in April 2023 and an amount of Rs 5.67 crore allegedly held in 92 dummy bank accounts was frozen.
