Cop on Ganesh Visarjan duty stabbed, 33-yr-old arrested in Bharuch

Police said the incident occurred at the traffic point near Bharuch Naka.

The Bharuch district police on Wednesday arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly attempting to murder an Assistant Head constable with a knife while the officer was on Ganesh Visarjan bandobast duty in Ankleshwar town on Tuesday evening, officers said.

Police said the incident occurred at the traffic point near Bharuch Naka.

Around 9pm on Tuesday, the accused, Mahendra Vasava, allegedly began hurling abuses at people passing by.

When Assistant Head Constable Lalit Somabhai intervened in the matter and tried to warn Vasava, the latter allegedly pulled out a knife and inflicted a deep wound on the officer’s right arm, said police.

He also injured the officer on the stomach before other police personnel on duty at the point rushed in to pin down Vasava. “Vasava was detained from the spot and taken to the police station while the assistant head constable was rushed to the hospital for treatment,” said police.

Vasava has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 109 (1) (attempt to murder), 121(1) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 221 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, and [296(B)] (uttering obscene words in any public place) as well as sections under the Gujarat Police Act.
