Days after a 27-year-old police constable was killed in a hit-and-run near Gujarat’s Amrutpura village on Saturday, the Bharuch district police on Friday arrested a 23-year-old truck driver allegedly involved in the incident.

The incident occurred on November 1, when Ankleshwar B Division police constable Arvind Avhar Chaudhary had stopped along the highway near Amrutpura to help an injured dog. He was returning to his parked motorcycle when he was hit.

Police Inspector Vijay Gadariya of Ankleshwar B Division police station said that based on CCTV footage and human intelligence, the police traced the truck — bearing a Rajasthan registration number — and later tracked down the accused in Nuh, Haryana.

The accused has been identified as Anwar Yunus Makul, a resident of Techa Patti Meoli in Nuh district. Police said Makul has been arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and rash and negligent driving, as well as provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. He will be produced in court as per procedure.

According to police, Chaudhary had travelled to Amrutpura — under the jurisdiction of Ankleshwar B Division — to serve summons to an accused. After completing his task, a resident informed him about an injured dog on the road divider. Chaudhary parked his motorcycle on the roadside and attended to the animal.

Inspector Gadariya said Chaudhary had last called the police station around 7 pm to inquire about medical treatment for animals. “His colleague had advised him to contact an animal rescue team or mobile animal ambulance,” Gadariya said.

Chaudhary spent about an hour and a half at the spot, ensuring the dog received medical attention. After handing the animal over to a rescue team, he was about to leave when the speeding truck allegedly ran him over, killing him on the spot.

Chaudhary was in his first posting as a constable.
