Centre drastically cuts grant for minority scholarship in Gujarat

According to the details given by Vora to one of Parmar’s questions, in 2014-15, the Gujarat government had sought a total grant of Rs 12334.52 lakh (or Rs 123.3 crore) from the central government for pre-matric, post-matric and merit-cum-Means scholarships for minorities.

The Centre has drastically cut the scholarship amount for minorities in Gujarat in the last one year, which was Tuesday revealed in two written replies of Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Ramanlal Vora in the Assembly to two starred questions by Congress MLA from Danilimda constituency Shailesh Parmar.

Against this, the central government had granted Rs 8600.86 lakh (Rs 86 crore).

However, the grant for the same three categories went down drastically for 2015-16. For this period, the Gujarat government sought a grant of Rs 4780.42 lakh (Rs 47.8 crore) from the Centre, but it received only Rs 51.08 lakh.

Later in a press statement, Parmar said: “On the one hand, the government is talking of minorities’ education, and on the other hand, due to non-allotment of scholarship grants, the education of minority communities was being hampered.”
