Around 1,100 Maldhari (cattle herders) families, who were allotted residential plots on rent in 1960-61 in Odhav, Amraiwadi and Jashodanagar areas of Ahmedabad city, will now be able to get ownership of the land at concessional rates.

Following Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s decision, Minister of State Jagdish Vishvakarma made an announcement in this regard on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, Vishvakarma said that the Gujarat government had acquired land and allotted it to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in 1960-61 with an objective of settling Maldhari families there with arrangement to keep their livestock on the premises. At that time, the AMC had bifurcated plots on those land parcels while coming up with colonies for the Maldhari community with allotment of the same on rent to over a thousand families.

An official release stated that it has been over 50 years since the allotment and Maldhari community has repeatedly made demands to get the ownership rights of the plots. CM Patel has positively responded to the demand and allowed to sell it to the occupants at concessional rates, which is 15% of the prevalent jantri rates (annual statement of rates of land in different parts of the state), it added. The occupants will be able to get ownership rights by paying the amount within the next six months.

The heirs of the original allottee will have to pay Rs 1,000 as transfer fee to AMC. In case of other occupants, a payment of Rs 20,000 has to be made as transfer fee. The present occupants will also have to clear all dues of the plots to AMC. If some unauthorised development is done on the plot of land, it could be regularised by paying a fixed amount and presenting necessary evidence under the provisions of the Gujarat Regularisation of Unauthorised Development Act. This land cannot be utilised for any other purpose than residential for the next 10 years. Besides, the owners would not be able to sell or transfer it.
