More than one-and-half months since a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Cadila Pharmaceuticals Chairman and Managing Director Rajiv Modi and employee Jhonson Mathew in a sexual assault complaint, the Gujarat Police are interrogating Modi who appeared before the investigators in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Confirming the development, Lavina Sinha, Ahmedabad City Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1), said, “He (Modi) has not surrendered yet, he has come to the Sola police station to give a statement.”
Modi and Mathew have been charged with rape, criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty, and criminal intimidation under the provisions of Indian Penal Code.
Chirag Koradia, Joint Commissioner of Police, Sector-1 said, “Inspector R H Solanki has been questioning Rajiv Modi since 8 am in Sola police station. He appeared after the police summoned him for interrogation. We’re interrogating based on the evidence and allegations, further investigation is underway”.
An FIR was registered on December 31, 2023, after the Gujarat HC the same month had set aside a magisterial court’s order which had rejected the Bulgarian woman’s complaint alleging rape and sexual harassment by Modi.
The HC had also directed that a senior IPS officer nominated by the state DIG (law and order) should investigate the complaint and that the probe be completed within two months.
The complainant, who was employed as a flight attendant and a personal assistant for CMD Modi in August 2022, has alleged several instances of sexual harassment between February and March 2023. She also alleged that she was fired in April after she refused to surrender to CMD Modi’s “illicit demands”.
The woman moved the magistrate court in July 2023, alleging rape, criminal assault and criminal intimidation, among others, by the CMD and Jhonson Matthew.
