A day after the collapse of a section of a slab of the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge over the Mahisagar river in Vadodara district, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel suspended four engineers of the Roads and Building (R&B) department following an “in-depth scrutiny” into the tragedy by a “high-level” committee.

The CM has also ordered a thorough inspection and safety checks on all other bridges across the state on war footing, the release said.

Among those suspended with immediate effect are R&B Vadodara Division Executive Engineer NM Nayakawala, Deputy Executive Engineers UC Patel and RT Patel, and Assistant Engineer JV Shah, the Gujarat government said on Thursday evening.

The suspension of the four engineers comes hours after a high-level committee comprising officials of the state R&B department visited the site of the collapse in Padra taluka. At least 17 persons were killed and eight injured in the accident, even as search is on for three missing persons.

According to the statement issued by the state government, “The Chief Minister had formed a team of experts to inspect in detail the entire duration of the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge, including the repairs carried out, inspections, quality check and other such parameters during the lifetime of the bridge. The team had prepared a report and handed it over to the Chief Minister…”

The release stated: “As per the causes of the collapse mentioned in the primary probe, the Chief Minister has decided to immediately suspend the officers responsible for the tragedy…”
