Vadodara Congress unit President Rutvij Joshi was Friday questioned for over five hours in the case of anonymous banners that had cropped against the BJP and its Lok Sabha candidate, sitting MP Ranjan Bhatt, in multiple places in the city this week.
The appearance of the banners had led to the arrest of four persons in two separate cases within hours. Joshi, who appeared before the Warasiya police station after receiving a summons in one of the two cases, has also been summoned by the Atladara police station in the second case.
Police said Friday that Joshi’s name had cropped up during the questioning of the accused, who were arrested Wednesday for putting up the banners against the BJP and Bhatt. Complying with the summons, Joshi, accompanied by senior Congress leaders like Chandrakant Shrivastav as well as the members of the party’s legal cell, visited the Warasiya police station for questioning.
“As the Congress President, I have come to the police station to comply with the procedure… The police never called in the BJP leaders who were responsible for the contract given out in the Harni boat tragedy that killed 14 persons… But the police promptly called in Congress leaders to question about the banners. We do not need to protest against BJP or Ranjan Bhatt in the dark. We openly protest against the BJP, Bhatt and also the misuse of the police by the party that is in power,” Joshi said.
On Wednesday, the Warasiya police had arrested Congress worker Harish Odh under two bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of People Act, in connection with the banners that came up in the Karelibaug area. The Atladara police station had also arrested two persons for putting up anti-BJP banners in the Vadsar area of the city.
