The three-week long strike by workers of the Arvind Mills is likely to end soon,as the management offered to take back the sacked employees on Friday. During the negotiations with the representatives of the Textile Labour Association (TLA),the management of Arvind group agreed to take back the workers from Friday night, according to Arvind’s spokesperson.

The TLA brought 50 representatives from Arvind as well as the striking workers from Ankur mills,to meet the management of Arvind. These representatives requested the management to take back all the sacked workers.

According to a statement, the Arvind group will withdraw the termination of all these employees, but will hold an enquiry against the striking workers.

“We have negotiated with the mill management to take back all the workers including those who were fired,to which they have agreed. If the workers re-join duty from Friday night, the strike shall end or else it shall continue,” General Secretary of TLA Amar Barot said.”Depending on the worker’s joining back, further rounds of negotiations with the Ahmedabad Textile Mills Association (ATMA) over interim relief will continue,” Barot said. “The proposal for interim relief is being considered and a decision on it could be expected within a short period,” he added.

On June 4,around 200 workers at Arvind’s Naroda plant went on strike, severely affecting the production of the textile mill. The plant employs 3,400 workers and primarily produces denim fabric. The Naroda plant itself produces an estimated 84 million metres of denim out the 108 million metres of denim produced by the whole company annually.

About half of the 1,100 workers of Ankur Textiles,a division of Arvind Ltd which manufactures voile fabric, afterwards joined the strike demanding a 40 per cent hike in their wages. The mills affected by the workers’ strike include Arvind Ltd,Ankur,Ashima and Asarwa Mills.
