The 36-km annual Lili Parikrama pilgrimage at Mount Girnar in Gujarat, scheduled from November 2 to 5, has been cancelled due to heavy rainfall, Junagadh District Collector Anil Ranavasiya said on Friday. The seers, however, will perform a “symbolic” parikrama (circumambulation) on the night of Saturday, he added.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light thunderstorms with lightning and 30-40 kmph surface winds in the state on Sunday. While a heavy rainfall was forecast for Bharuch, Surat, Amreli and Bhavnagar for Saturday, IMD has forecast light to moderate rains across the state on Sunday.

Ranavasiya said that the district administration along with seers and religious leaders, decided to cancel this year’s pilgrimage following an inspection of the route.

“All preparations were undertaken for the parikrama but following the October 27 rain, the 36-km route is slippery and unsafe for devotees. This morning, we conducted an inspection and found the path to be very bad and near to impossible for people to do parikrama. Thus, the annual event will not be organised this year. However, to continue the importance of the religious tradition, a symbolic parikrama will be performed by saints on the night of November 1,” Ranavasiya said.

Lakhs of devotees undertake the Lili Parikrama of Mount Girnar every year from Kartik Sud Ekadashi to Purnima. The 36-km trek includes four halts — the first after 12 km, followed by three more at 8-km intervals, with the final stop at Bhavnath. According to legend, Lord Krishna was the first to perform the Parikrama of Mount Girnar.
