An MBBS from the Government Medical College (GMC) in Surat, 24-year-old Dr Bhavesh Senta went to the B J Medical College in Ahmedabad on June 12 to meet his sister Dr Kajal and brother-in-law Dr Pradeep Solanki – a neurosurgeon with the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

In the afternoon, as the trio was having lunch in a hostel room, Dr Solanki got a work call and rushed back to the hospital, leaving Dr Bhavesh and Dr Kajal, a homeopathic doctor, behind. Moments later, a London-bound Air India plane crashed into the hostel building, resulting in the death of 241 out of its 242 passengers.

Dr Bhavesh and Dr Kajal were among the at least 20 ground casualties that have been recorded in the crash.

Dr Kajal was pregnant at the time of her death, it has been learnt.

The news of Dr Bhavesh’s death, who was preparing for PG NEET, has left his alma mater in shock.

Talking to The Indian Express, GMC in-charge Dean Dr Nimesh Verma said, “We came to know a couple of days later (after the crash) that our medical college’s ex-student Dr Bhavesh Senta died in the tragedy. He was having lunch with his sister, Dr Kajal Solanki, and her husband, Dr Pradeep Solanki, at the BJ Medical College hostel room. Dr Solanki received a call from the hospital and rushed to his workplace, leaving his around six months’ pregnant wife and her brother behind… We are deeply shocked by the loss of two distinguished doctors from the medical fraternity. In the next couple of days, we are planning to organise a condolence event on the premises of GMC in Surat.”

A final-year MBBS student at GMC, on condition of anonymity, said, “Dr Bhavesh and I were close friends as we both hail from Mahuva in Bhavnagar. Dr Bhavesh had completed his internship at GMC, Surat, last year. He was preparing for his PG and staying at a rented house in Ahmedabad. He used to often visit his brother-in-law, Dr Solanki, to take tips.”

Dr Bhavesh and Dr Kajal’s father Dhirubhai Senta is a property agent in Mahuva, the student said. The siblings are survived by a younger sister.

The student further said, “Dr Bhavesh used to guide me in my medical studies. We were both away from our families, and thus we grew close. I last chatted with Dr Bhavesh five days before the plane crash incident. Since I am preparing for my final-year exams, I used to take his help.”

BJ Medical College’s Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi told The Indian Express, “The bodies of Dr Bhavesh and Dr Kajal were handed over to their relatives for final rites, after their DNA matched with their relatives.”

The brother-sister duo was cremated a couple of days ago at their native place in Mahuva, said the medical student quoted above.
