Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Thursday inaugurated the newly built MLA Quarters Complex in Gandhinagar and laid the foundation stone for a six-lane expansion of the Shantipura-Khoraj GIDC Road in Sanand, according to official statements from the Gujarat government.
The MLA quarters, constructed at a cost of Rs 325 crore in Sector 17 of Gandhinagar, comprise 216 units in 12 blocks. Each unit spans 238.45 square metres and includes three bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, office room, and a servant’s room. Built by the state Roads and Buildings Department over an area of 28,576 square metres, the complex also features a multipurpose hall, community hall, swimming pool, gymnasium, canteen, clinic, and provision store. Each quarter has two parking spaces — one in the basement and one on the ground floor. A total of 600 trees have been planted on the campus.
Shah was joined by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi at the event.
Earlier in the day, Shah laid the foundation stone for the six-laning of a 28.8 km stretch of the Ahmedabad-Maliya highway between Shantipura Crossroads and Khoraj GIDC in Sanand. The project, estimated to cost Rs 805 crore, includes the expansion of 13 small bridges, construction of a six-lane elevated flyover, a three-lane right-turn flyover, and five new underpasses.
According to the state, the expansion was necessitated by increased vehicular movement following rapid industrial development in Sanand and surrounding areas. The existing four-lane road carries over 43,000 vehicles daily, often leading to congestion, it said. Once completed, the project is expected to ease long-distance traffic towards Surendranagar, Shankheshwar, Radhanpur, and Patan, and reduce both accidents and travel time.
On the occasion, Shah and CM Patel also extended New Year greetings to residents of Sanand. Shah is currently in Gujarat to mark Diwali and the Gujarati New Year celebrations.
