Five persons, including two minors, were injured after a high-rise spinning ride (drop tower) crashed at a crowded temple fair in Navsari district of Gujarat on Sunday night, police said.
The accident occurred around 10:45 pm at a fair organised on the premises of Somnath Mahadev temple at Bilimora town as part of the Shrawan festival.
Police said that the condition of the injured is reported to be stable. Navsari District Collector Kshipra Agre, meanwhile, formed a committee to probe the incident.
Police said that the incident took place when the ride with a capacity of 32 seats was moving upward.
Navsari Superintendent of Police Sushil Agrawal said: “Eight passengers who were seated in the ride fell on the ground after the cable snapped off.”
Police personnel present on the spot controlled the crowd and shifted the injured to hospital, the SP said.
The injured have been identified as Rajiv Tandel (14), Dirdh Tandel (14), Roshni Vikash Patel (30), Disha Rakesh Patel (21), all residents of Navsari district, and Bakil Shaikh (30), the ride operator. Shaikh, who was treated in Billimora hospital, was later shifted to a private hospital in Surat, police said.
Forensic officers and Navsari district administration officials visited the spot.
“Shivam Agency, run by one Viral Pithwa, a resident of Surendranagar, had obtained permission from the entertainment committee of the District Collector for the installation of 7 joy rides for the pilgrims visiting the fair,” Agrawal told The Indian Express.
The SP said the police have launched an investigation into the matter. “We are probing whether there is criminal negligence. The district administration has also started its probe. At present, we have not registered any offence. We will take further actions based on the probe report,” he said.
