The state animal husbandry department on Saturday said that since August 25, four cattle have died at Verkui village in Surat’s Mangrol taluka due to Lumpy skin disease virus. Also, 40 cases of Lumpy skin disease have been reported across the taluka.
After over 15 cattle, mostly cows and calves, were found dead at Verkui village under suspicious circumstances in August, doctors from the district panchayat veterinary department and Sumul Dairy had visited the village to take samples of 13 infected cattle and sent the same to the government laboratory in Ahmedabad for testing.
The samples of four cattle which had died since August 25 at Verkui were also tested and the report turned out to be positive on Friday.
Deputy Director (Animal Husbandry) in the Surat District Panchayat, Dr Hiren Bhimani, said; “We carried out a survey in Verkui and its neighbouring 36 villages. The survey has found 40 cases of Lumpy skin disease and veterinary teams have been deployed for daily monitoring of the cattle… Also, after August 25, four deaths due to the virus had taken place in Verkui village.”
He added, “We have created awareness among cattle rearers with the help of Sumul Dairy’s veterinary doctors’ team, on what steps should be taken. We have told them to first isolate the cattle and immediately inform the veterinary doctor or the village sarpanch. Our survey team has till now vaccinated over 10,000 of the 30,000 cattle in the taluka… We have also pressed into service mobile vans to create awareness among cattle rearers in different villages. Before September 15, our target is to vaccinate all cattle in Mangrol taluka,” said Bhimani.
