Does Aadhaar need legal backing?

In principle, yes. But we are opposed to any attempt to link Aadhaar with government services or benefits, or to make it compulsory.

So would you support the Bill passed today?

Not at all. The Bill has a number of deficiencies. It seeks to make Aadhaar compulsory, establishes a link between Aadhaar numbers and govt services, does not address privacy concerns.

What is the problem in linking Aadhaar with government services?

They say it will improve the efficiency of those schemes. But, the real purpose is to reduce the amount and coverage of subsidies. It is another way of exclusion.

What about the Bill being categorised as money Bill?

This was an attempt by this government to bypass Rajya Sabha.

What is your plan now?

We will continue to fight all attempts to exclude people from government subsidies in the name of targeting by Aadhaar.
