Shivraj Singh Chauhan is the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He assumed office in November 2005. Before being part of the BJP, he was member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) which he joined as a 13-year old. As an essential part of the BJP, he has served as the party's general secretary and president in Madhya Pradesh. Chauhan's educational background is in philosophy and he is an agriculturist by profession. His official political career began in the year 1990 when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Budhni constituency. During his chief ministerial tenure, he was accused of corruption in the Vyapam scam.
