Her political career also started under the Rashtriya Janata Dal banner, as she won the 1999 Lok Sabha elections from the Motihari Lok Sabha seat. She later shifted her allegiance to Bhartiya Janata Party. She first won the Lok Sabha elections on BJP ticket in 2009 from Seohar Lok Sabha seat. The masses of her constituency welcomed her governance as she went on to defend her seat in both the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

She found herself surrounded by controversy when Samajwadi Party’s Azam Khan passed sexist comments towards her in 2019. He later apologised for his comments and admitted his mistake.
