Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, often referred to as KCR, is a prominent Indian politician born on February 17, 1954. Currently the leader of the opposition in the Telangana Legislative Assembly, he represents the Gajwel constituency. KCR is the founder and president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), a regional party with growing national ambitions. His political career is indelibly linked to the Telangana movement, culminating in the formation of the new state. He served as Telangana's first Chief Minister for nearly a decade, a period marked by significant infrastructural development and welfare schemes. Key policy stances during his tenure included irrigation projects like the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project and focus on welfare programs targeting farmers and the underprivileged. While his leadership has garnered considerable support, his tenure also faced criticism. Post his defeat in the recent elections, his focus remains on strengthening the BRS's national presence. He continues to be a significant figure in national politics, his influence stemming from his success in leading the Telangana movement and subsequent governance of the state. His political persona is defined by his assertive leadership style and regionalist focus.
