Jitendra Singh biography

Dr Jitendra Singh assumed the charge of Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in June 2024. Singh has held this portfolio nearly for two consecutive terms except for a brief period since 2014. He is a member of Parliament from the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency.

Singh is also the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Science and Technology; Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office; Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions; Minister of State in the Department of Atomic Energy; and Minister of State in the Department of Space.

Before he plunged full-time into politics, Union Minister of State for Science Dr Jitendra Singh was a doctor of diabetes and endocrinology and continues to pore over medical research. During a meeting with Dr Eric J Rubin, Editor-in-Chief, New England Journal of Medicine, Dr Singh raised an issue close to his heart. Citing research over the years, he said it has been proven beyond a doubt that people of Indian origin living in the US and Europe for several generations continue to have a higher risk of diabetes due to central obesity. The two medical academicians discussed the advancements in the field such as research on gut bacteria improving insulin resistance. They also discussed tuberculosis that Dr Rubin specialises in and India is working to eliminate.

Singh, who represents ‘Udhampur-Doda-Kathua’ Parliamentary Constituency, has taken over as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology as the Ministries were included under the charge of Office of the Prime Minister. He is also Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions; Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space.

He has also been a professor, a consultant, clinical practitioner, author of eight books, and a newspaper columnist as also the ex-chairman for the National Scientific Committee Diabetes and the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India.

With an M.B.B.S. degree from Stanley Medical College, Chennai and M.D. from Government Medical College, Jammu, Dr Singh has authored several books including Monograms on Diabetes and World Book Fair best seller, “Diabetes Made Easy”. He is also the author of chapters on diabetes in text books for Post Graduate Course (Medicine) and runs a syndicated weekly column “Tales of Travesty”, popularly read and regularly published for three decades. He is Minister of State for Prime Minister’s Office; Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions; Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space.

‘Udhampur-Doda-Kathua’ Parliamentary Constituency is the most developed constituencies in India among the 543 Parliamentary Constituencies in the country having seen the tremendous development in last nine years under PM Narendra Modi. Dr. Jitendra Singh said this while addressing media on the sidelines of an event on '9 years of Seva’ 9 years of achievements of the government at Udhampur.
