Gopal Chinayya Shetty, also known as Gopal Shetty, is a Manglore-based political leader and a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party. He is the incumbent Member of the Parliament from Maharastra’s Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency. He was born on January 31, 1954, in Mumbai.
He started his political career at the state level and served two terms in Maharastra’s State Legislative. He has also been a Corporator of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from 1992 to 2004 and a member of the Public Accounts Committee since May 2018.
His first attempt at national politics became successful when he contested and won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat on the BJP’s ticket. He retained his seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, marking his second consecutive term in the lower house of the Indian Parliament.
He has been involved in various controversies. In 2014, he compared farmer suicides to fashion trends, which was viewed as a mockery of farmers. He later claimed that he had no intention to undermine farmers and that he was highlighting general patterns for policy.
