U.N. Security Council Condemns Strikes on Qatar but Stops Short of Naming Israel

The United Nations Security Council has condemned recent strikes on Qatar’s capital Doha but did not mention Israel in its statement, despite Israel admitting it targeted Hamas leaders there. The statement, backed even by the U.S., underscored the need for de-escalation and support for Qatar’s sovereignty. Qatar accused Israel of deliberately undermining its mediation efforts in the Gaza war, while Algeria criticized the council for failing to name the aggressor. The U.S. called the attack “unfortunate” but said it could still present an opportunity for peace. With more than 64,000 people killed in Gaza since October 2023, tensions are deepening as international pressure mounts for a ceasefire.
