
SOUMYAJIT GHOSH, 23: Soumyajit Ghosh has earlier represented India in London summer Olympics. He was just 19 when he participated in London and by doing so he became the youngest Indian player to achieve the feat. Ghosh comes from a middle-class family from Siliguri, West Bengal, came to limelight when coach Bhawani Mukherji noticed the paddler during the 2008 Junior Commonwealth Games where he won the silver in the event. In recent time, Soumyajit has worked well on his service and adjusted his game by standing closer to the table which gives him an added advantage. It’s a ploy used by the Chinese players and the Indian player has adapted it well.
As just a 23-year old paddler, Soumyajit may go on to represent India at several future Olympics as well.
Career highlights: In 2014, Soumyajit Ghosh won gold medal in mixed doubles and men’s team event and claimed a silver and bronze in men’s singles and doubles at the Lusofonia Games
Qualifying event: Paddler booked his Olympic place by winning the group stage in the Asia Qualifiers in Hong Kong.
Record: Youngest national champion at the age of 19, won gold at the World Championship in 2016 also has two gold, three silver and one bronze medal in Commonwealth Championships in 2013 and 2015
Event: Ghosh will represents India at the Rio 2016 Olympics in rowing- Singles Sculls
Schedule: Men’s singles sculls rowing round is scheduled to take place on August 6 to August 14.
